This division...is almost entirely a string division, containing some of the wood-wind as well. The Oboe is an eighty-five note unit as indicated and shall be half capped, of a type similar to that produced by Mr. Fred White of Reading, Massachusetts. The scales of the string section will be left in some measure to the builder, approval first being had by the architect. The object is to produce a string organ imitative as closely as possible of the conditions existing in the string choirs of a concert orchestra. The orchestral strings are to be made of tin ninety-five per cent. pure. The Cornopean shall be a full-bodied reed, capable of adding suitable strength to the ensemble. The Vox Humana shall be a characteristic stop. The details of both Cornopean and the Vox Humana will be given by the architect. This organ shall be enclosed in a swell box.

This department's Fagotto, Cornopean, and most of its strings were the only stops on the original instrument to have "extra pipes" - so the octave coupler would not run out of notes to sound when keys above c3 were played.
