WHAT ARE "SEPARATION" AND "PIZZICATO" COUPLERS?
Separation Coupler is another name for the Unison Off. When used in conjunction with a Super Octave and/or Sub Octave coupler, the unison note is silenced - leaving only the notes sounded by the Super/Sub coupler(s). The device can be used, for example, to create an 8-foot voice from a 16-foot register, i.e. by drawing the 16-foot with the Octave and Separation. In effect, this 'transposes' the stop up 12 notes.
Pizzicato Couplers attempt to imitate the sound of the orchestra's stringed instruments being plucked. The is achieved by a special mechanism that cuts-off the wind supply almost as soon as the pipes have spoken, even though the manual keys may still be depressed.
