WHAT MAKES THE MIDMER-LOSH ORGAN THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD?
There are a number of ways of measuring the size of a pipe organ, these include: the instrument's weight, the size/area of its chambers, the number of manuals, the number of stops, the number of stop controls, the number of ranks, the number of pipes.
The Guinness Book of World Records used the last of these measures, i.e. pipe numbers. Well, it is a "pipe" organ, after all! That being the case, it seems more-than-likely that the Midmer-Losh organ is indeed the world's largest. Certainly it was listed as such in the Guinness Book of World Records until the category was dropped.

However, the Wanamaker organ at Macy's Store, Philadelphia, has a greater number of ranks (462, compared to 449) and is the largest operational organ in the world.
