HOW MUCH OF THE MIDMER-LOSH ORGAN IS WORKING?
At present, only stops in the Right Stage chamber are playable - and not all of them. Some stops that are playable have dead notes and some would work but the stop-keys that control them don't. Frankly, the situation can change from day-to-day, so it's impossible to put cast-iron figures on what's working and what's not. Nevertheless, it is hoped this chamber will be fully operational after the installation of new magnets, the ordering of which is currently in-hand. Cleaning of contacts and mechanisms in the console will also help improve the situation.
The Right Stage chamber's departments are: Pedal Right (home of the 64-foot and the 100-inch Ophicleide), Pedal Second Touch, Pedal Percussion, Great, Great-Solo, Grand Great, Solo, and Solo-Great. The chamber contains 96 voices, 132 ranks, and 9,759 pipes. As a mean average (of voices, ranks, pipes), these account for almost one-third of the instrument's resources. There are also 19 percussions - three melodic and 16 non-melodic.
Work has recently started on restoring the Swell organ, in the Left Stage chamber. This work will take some time to complete, as the Swell is a large department (36 voices, 55 ranks, 4,456 pipes) which accounts for around half of the chamber's 9,046 pipes. Other departments in this area (Pedal Left, Unenclosed Choir, Swell-Choir, String I) will then be considered for restoration.
